Vocabulary

As you can imagine, things get pretty, hm...
hairy around Maison Piglets these days. As a result, Piglet has picked up some new vocab words and phrases. We're *sure* an early start on such a vast range of word usage is going to get him into Stanford someday. Here's a random sampling of his new words and phrases:

boob
boobs
shit (breaking my no blog swearing rule in order to maintain integrity)
pump
spit up
blech! (this one hasn't made it into Webster's yet, but soon, very soon)
I go to Target
Daddy at work
Daddy at office
I'm leaking!!!
coffee
babies waah waah!
Mommy - GO GET IT.
NOW.
shhhhh, quiet
I did it!
binky
burpie
tripwire
P.U.!
I pee pee on Esha! (Lisa, our nanny)
Mama sad
I sad
Mama happy!
I happy!

I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to how and why he learned these new words. Kinda like a Mad Lib but with more poop.

Stay tuned for my Father's Day post. Mr. K is getting the same royal treatment I got! He is *SO* excited! (Aren't you?)

Holding on

I'll admit it, I've been so preoccupied with this pregnancy, getting ready for the Twinks and wrapping my head around going from one to three children in one fell swoop, that I have completely neglected my blogging roots. I originally started this blog about Piglet. My first, at the time my only, and the greatest love of my life.

Tonight a friend sent me a link to a blog entry written by a friend of hers. It was an entry about her son and his renewed separation anxiety after having missed a week of preschool while they were both sick. This mom wondered if she'd done wrong by her son (as the teacher pried him off her leg) by sending him to school too early. She felt pangs of guilt about her son not having enough time with her because every night he begged her to sit and cuddle with him a minute longer.

One line she wrote really stuck with me: "I know these days are fleeting, but isn't the holding on as important as the letting go?"

That question really gave me pause. Piglet is reaching the age now where many of his peers are being introduced to BIG new things.

Many of my friends are making plans to send their little ones to school next fall when they're all around 2.5. This is awesome and I'm happy for them that this will be a good experience for their children. I'm not 100% sure yet, but I do not think Piglet will be among those heading to preschool next fall. I know I'll get some flack for this and on more than one occasion I've already been accused of being over protective or not making Piglet experience new situations or forcing him outside of him comfort zone because "it'll be good for him." I just know my Piglet and I know that he's the kid that might need more time before that kind of transition. And to be honest, he has a LIFETIME of school ahead of him, waiting until he's three or even 3.5 is not the end of the world in my eyes.

I received all kinds of unwelcome criticism and advice about not letting him cry it out in his crib. Even when he cried so hard he'd throw up (every time), I was met with a lot of head shaking and "he'll never learn to fall asleep on his own if you always give in" talk. I don't judge people who can Ferberize and leave their shrieking child at the gym daycare without a backwards glance. I really don't. I say, good for them for having wills of steel and a child without a strong gag reflex. Even better if they don't have to go through all that and their child is just naturally outgoing and loves new situations and environments.

Piglet however, is not one of these children. He craves proximity to me and to his dad. He co-slept with us for a long time. This was not what we intended to do, but just a response to his personality and ours. Then about five months ago, we moved him into his own full-sized bed in his own room and he loves sleeping there. He still loves it best when we cuddle with him, reading books and singing lullabies until he falls asleep. Sure it's not as easy as putting him in his crib with a lovey and a nightlight and closing the door and yes, there are nights that I wish he was the kind of kid that went to bed so easily, but I accept Piglet as he is. He has an innate need to be close to us and as long as he needs us, we are here for him.

Myself, I am here for him because I know that he won't be 13 and still happy to sit next to me on the couch running a choo choo train up and down my arm (and right now, my belly). He won't always walk around the house bellowing "Maaaaaaamaaaaa!" when I'm just in the next room. I do believe he's more demanding and sensitive than other kids his age, but that's just HIM. It's who he is and that deserves to be nurtured and respected.

As cliché as it sounds, this time goes by in the blink of an eye and I want to cherish it entirely. I want to fill Piglet's life with as much joy and as little discomfort as possible. Of course there are moments when I worry that I am holding him back, that I'm somehow stifling his growth by not nudging him to be more adventurous, more bold, more accepting of new things. Then I look back at all the times I let him get comfortable in his own time and how much better it felt to know that he got there by himself, without me forcing it.

I believe with my entire heart that I am being the parent to him that he needs me to be. As for the question posed by a fellow blogger? My vote goes to holding on...even if it sometimes means holding on for dear life.

Eight Month Update

Piglet is a few days shy of being exactly eight months but I thought I'd write this post while I have a few minutes to myself.  Piglet is getting so big and his funny personality is more apparent than ever.  He has his two lower "bunny" teeth but I can't ever seem to catch them on camera.  I'll keep trying.  His hair is getting thicker but remains smooth and shiny as ever.  The debate at our house regarding where he got his "good hair" continues.  :)  He hasn't started crawling yet, but does push himself up on his hands and can get to anything he's set his sights on.

There are too many changes and milestones to list, but enjoy the few that I cherry-picked for the update below!

Piglet LOVES

  • petting his dog
  • any and all beverages, but especially yours
  • blowing raspberries into your cheek
  • clicking his tongue
  • sitting up with toys all around him
  • wearing two-piece PJs
  • lounging in his bathtub with a toy
  • when you blow in his ear
  • laughing his tinkly laugh
  • beets
  • rubbing his hands together like he's putting on lotion
  • his stuffed monkey named Howard
  • strawberry ice cream (bad mommy)
  • when you say "ah-choo!"
  • being around (and batting at) other babies
  • checking himself out in the mirror
  • chewing on his feet
  • Dr. Snyder, his pediatrician

Piglet is OVER

  • getting out of the bathtub
  • anyone who is not mommy after 7 p.m. (yes, still)
  • taking one long morning nap
  • car rides longer than 40 minutes
  • apples
  • getting his finger and toenails cut
  • diaper changes when he first wakes up
  • going to bed later than 7:30 p.m.
  • "parachute time" at Gymboree class
  • any stuffed animal other than his monkey named Howard
  • mommy changing his clothes three times a day because of the weather shifting (cold in the a.m., hot in the p.m., cold again in the evening)
  • seeing something he wants and getting denied access by you
  • strolling indoors (e.g. the mall...mommy finds this very alarming)

Going out without Piglet

So our first time leaving Piglet (both of us that is) in about five months can be summed up by the photos below.

Here we are having a nice, leisurely dinner to celebrate my bestfriend's (seated next to me) birthday. Dh is across the table from me because we decided to mix it up. :)

Here is Piglet/Shrieker when I got to my parents' place to pick him up three hours later. I don't think we will be able to go out without him again (at bedtime anyway) for at least another few months. My mom, God bless her said she was fine, but she just felt so bad for the shrieking Piglet. I, on the other hand felt so bad for her! Piglet totally terrorized she and my dad.  By the way, that curl on the side of his head is always present, but gets curlier the madder he gets.  He was seriously hacked off at us last night!

Are you an FOP? Scroll down to find out!

What's an FOP you ask?  A Friend of Piglet of course!  Get your mind out of the gutter.

These are the twins Gracen and Rowan.  Our dads are supernerds and hang out whenever our moms will let them.  Between our two moms, they know everything about everything.  No, really.

This is my dad and me with our friends Ashley and Erin.  Erin is older and bigger than me, but I'm catching up!   Erin also has a blog - mcmillerpdx which my mom reads all the time.

This is my friend Matteos, our moms say we are "brothas."  He lives in Hotlanta. Our birthdays are just three days apart.  Someday we will celebrate them together!

This is my cousin Carson, he and I are almost exactly one year apart.  His mom, my auntie, says we're going to get into lots of trouble together for many years to come.  See, Carson is already practicing saying "What? we didn't do it!"

These are my cousins Eva and Lucie.  They aren't sisters, but they sure do look alike!  Mommy says they're "trouble."

These are (yes) MORE cousins...Dillon and Paige.  They are buddies.  I hope they'll still be nice to be when they're cool kids and I'm still just a little peanut.

This is Will who has a lot of nicknames like P. Jr. and Little P to name a few.  Apparently he is going to take me hunting and fishing to balance out the inevitable nerd in me.

This is Avery.  Our moms have been friends forever.  They don't even need to say anything to know what the other one is thinking. Scary.  It will be hard to pull one over on these two!  I threw a dinner party and Avery came.  She broke in my new booster and sang "Ten Little Monkeys" for me.  I can already tell that I can learn a lot from her, plus she's purty.

C'est ma cousine Aitana.  Elle est ne le cinq Aout a l'Espagne.  Elle is tres jolie, non? J'taime!  Bet you didn't know I was a multilingual piglet!  Here's something funny, her parents call her Lechon which means "little pig" in Spanish.  We have the same nickname but just in different languages!

This is my friend Kate, aka Miss Cutie K. She's made LOTS of appearances on my blog already because, well, our moms love taking pictures of us together! Poor saps.

This is Haven.  Her mom and my mom have been friends since high school.  I'm giving her pointers on how to keep her hair from falling out.  So far it's working!

***If you know you're an FOP but your picture isn't posted, it's because mommy doesn't have a picture of you!  Send it on over and she'll add it right away!***
